What Is TED?

TED, an acronym for Thyroid Eye Disease, refers to a condition in which one’s immune system erroneously attacks the tissue behind one's eyes, resulting in redness, swelling, and inflammation. According to the ophthalmology professionals at the Thyroid Eyes at the Eye Wellness Center in Houston, TX, TED is a chronic condition. If left untreated, more serious eye damage will likely occur. Early treatment of TED is the best way to avoid serious eye damage.

TED is a condition that is mainly associated with an over-active thyroid resulting from the presence of Graves’ disease. About 25 percent of those with Graves’ disease are likely to develop thyroid eye disease before, during, or after the diagnosis this specific thyroid disorder.

The Symptoms of Thyroid Eye Disease

TED manifestations are a bit unpredictable, which means they generally impact each person differently, with symptoms appearing at any time and ranging from mild to severe. The sooner the symptoms listed below are identified, the quicker an eye doctor, like our ophthalmologist specialists at Thyroid Eyes at the Eye Wellness Center, can create a tailored treatment plan.

•           Under-eye bags

•           Blurred or double vision

•           Dry or watery eyes

•           Swelling or fullness in one or both upper eyelids

•           Change of the eyes’ appearance (usually staring/bulging)

•           Difficulty moving the eyes

•           Chronic grittiness in the eyes

•           Light sensitivity

•           Pain in/behind the eye, particularly when looking up/down/sideways

•           Redness of the lids and eyes

Treating TED

TED's symptoms can be progressive during the first six to twelve months of development, which is why early diagnosis/treatment is critical to proactively preventing this condition from worsening.

Artificial tear drops can help relieve dry eyes for mild TED symptoms or early diagnosis. Other supplements and medication can also be helpful in managing TED.

Some patients with TED may find their eye appearance has changed. For these patients, surgery may be a recommended option. Various surgical opportunities are available as a part of the rehabilitative process.
