Thyroid Eyes at the Eye Wellness Center

We are proud to announce that Rosa Tang, MD at Thyroid Eyes at the Eye Wellness Center is working to improve the quality of care for patients with severe dry eyes. The Eye Wellness Center is known as a Dry Eye Center of Excellence based on over 20 years of collaborative experience in diagnosing and treating ophthalmic and neuro-ophthalmic conditions, including severe dry eyes secondly to inflammatory conditions such as Sjogren's Syndrome, Lupus, and rheumatoid arthritis. Also, dryness secondary due to conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, Multiple Sclerosis, patient medication side effects and more.

Dr. Tang has a certified ophthalmic assistant, Millie Dunn, to support her dry eye patients through patient education and assist the doctors in their clinical treatments. She, along with the doctors will create a specialized patient education home care plan for each dry eye patient based upon the doctors findings. Our clinic customizes a specific therapeutic plan to facilitate understanding and long-term successful results in the long term management.

New Innovations in Dry Eye Treatment

One of the newest treatments we are now using is regenerative medicine for dry eyes in the form of amniotic membrane tissue therapy. Amniotic membranes reduce inflammation and provide a conduit for epithelial cell regeneration! Benefits of amniotic membranes provide substantial benefit in several different ways. The membranes are restorative in nature and provide relief as it heals the cornea and significantly reduces the pain of the inflamed cornea, while also eliminating the friction of the eyelids against a sore surface of the eye. The membrane dissolves slowly into the eye. It promotes healing cell growth through cell migration. The amniotic membrane tissue is held gently and securely in place with a soft, comfortable bandage contact lens overlay. The bandage lens is removed 48 hours later, after complete absorption of the membrane has been achieved.

Our optometrist can also provide specialized services for individuals with unique needs. These services may include:       

•  Thyroid Eye Disease or Graves Disease Management: Beyond corrective measures, we actively manage the symptoms of thyroid eye disease. We may recommend therapies to reduce inflammation, improve lubrication, and address eyelid issues. 

• Severe Dry Eye Treatment: Various therapies to treat and manage the different causes of dry eyes may be included in these plans. 

Treatments may include:

Medications either/both oral or eye drop medications, blinking exercises, specific types of preservative-free artificial tears,
nutraceutical vitamin therapies for the ocular surface, medicated or hypertonic ointments for the eye, lid treatments and heat therapy, regenerative tear therapy drops, and more.

• Specialized Contact Lenses for Dry Eye:  Scleral contact lenses are gas-permeable lenses(an RGP lens type) that vaults over the cornea creating a space filled with fluid supporting healing and allowing a tear reservoir to form.
